Our 30th of January meeting welcomed broadcaster & writer ’Ken Pye FRSA’, our guest speaker who told us of the ’Characters & Curiosities of Liverpool’.  Ken told us tales of the 13th & 14th Earls of Derby and their love & hatred of animals respectively.

We were fascinated to learn that St John’s Gardens behind St George’s Hall used to be a cemetery and that  bodies of French soldiers still lie there.

Should you ever visit the Liverpool Maritime Museum you will see the figure head of a vessel called ‘Lottie Sleigh’. Thanks to Ken we now know it’s history and the explosion that occurred in 1864 whilst the ship was in dock at Liverpool and the widespread damage the explosion caused, as far away as Calderstones Park where it caused the branches of the Old Allerton Oak to subside, hence why they are held up by steel girders.  Ken was very entertaining and we hope to welcome him back another time.
